Applications of Electric Transformers

Electric transformers exist in our everyday life and there would be no way possible you would be reading this if not for a transformer that transforms the electricity that enters into your home or business and to the computer you are now using.  The most common electric transformers are the one that is hanging on a pole called a pole transformer or a pad mounted transformer that brings our electricity to our homes.  But their are many other types of electric transformers each performing a function.  All electric transformers main use is to step up the voltage or step down the voltage and some provide isolation.  All our industrial and manufacturing facilities use transformers to make their facility operate more efficiently.  Electric transformers are simple devices and because of no moving parts offers years of services with little care.  TEMCo offers some of the most energy efficient transformers on the market with their unique core design and copper wiring.  TEMCo large inventory and their team dedicated to providing the right transformer for the applications, you can have ease of mind by consulting one of our trained specialists.

Structure of a Electric Transformer 

An electric transformer is made up of iron core with winding of insulated wire called coils.  It operates based on a simple fact about electricity.  When a fluctuating electric current flow through a wire, it generates a magnetic field all around it called a magnetic flux.  The strength of the magnetism is directly related to the size of the electric current.  When a magnetic field fluctuates around a piece of wire, it generates an electric current in the wire.  Therefore, if we put a second coil of wire next to the first one, and send a fluctuating electric current into the first coil, we will create an electric current in the second wire.  The current in the first coil is usually called a primary and the second wire is called the secondary current.  If the secondary coil has the same number of turns as the primary the electric current will be the same.  However, if we have more or fewer turns in the secondary coil, we can make the current and voltage bigger or smaller than the primary current and voltage.  An example of this if we have voltage on the high side of the power pole is 12,000 volts and the power coming from the pole transformer into your home is 120 volts.  The ratio of the step down transformer would be 100 to 1.  In other words, for every 100 winding on the high side, there is one winding on the low side.

Sizing and Selecting of a Electric Transformer

Electric transformer size is determined by the KVA of the load and the KVA of the transformer should be equal or greater than the KVA of the load to handle present requirements and to account for future expansion.  There are 4 things you need to determine and they are:

  1. Load voltage - load voltage, or secondary voltage, is the voltage needed to operate the load.

  2. Load current/amps 

  3. Line voltage - or primary voltage, is the voltage from the source.  

  4. Determine if your application is single-phase or three-phase, and use the corresponding formula.
